MLK Task Force Job Completed?
Author: PRESTON KNIGHT
Date: August 31, 2013
Publication: Daily News-Record (Harrisonburg, VA)

HARRISONBURG - The core mission - in fact the only one - of the Martin
Luther King Jr. renaming/naming task force was to find a way to honor
the slain civil rights leader in Harrisonburg.

Now that City Council agreed with the group's idea of renaming
Cantrell Avenue, task force members are wondering if the city has any
further need for them. It doesn't. At least it doesn't as a
designated task force, council members say. "I don't think we did all
that we did just to be dropped..."

he said. "You may not agree with everything, but we can agree that
love is the key." Maclin addressed about 70 people during a rally in
support of renaming Cantrell Avenue to Martin Luther King
Jr. Way. Hours...

HARRISONBURG - Another wrinkle will be added next week to the ongoing
debate on whether Cantrell Avenue should be renamed Martin Luther King
Jr. Way.

The city announced Wednesday that a public hearing on the renaming
proposal scheduled for City Council's meeting on Tuesday has been
postponed. It's the second time the hearing has been delayed. Council

2,100 current and past residents who reminisce about the city - has
fashioned a petition to give council members at their June 18 meeting.
As of early Monday, more than 30 people had signed it, and the high
volume of comments on the Facebook site led organizers...

street to be renamed in honor of Martin Luther King Jr.

Now, the group is tasked with determining how to best convince
Harrisonburg City Council of its choice. A seven-person task force,
which council authorized to make a recommendation on a street for
renaming, picked Cantrell over Stone Spring Road during a meeting at

street, bridge - or, the latest wrinkle, a portion of Interstate 81 -
after Martin Luther King Jr. to the public.

A pair of meetings has been scheduled for the next few weeks to, it is

February. On May 6, residents interested in joining a task force to

Publication: Daily News-Record (Harrisonburg, VA)

HARRISONBURG - Vine Street, your name will live on.

Cantrell Avenue and the Talmage R. Cooley Bridge on it - yes, the
Cantrell bridge has a name - your identities should go unchanged as
well. But heavily traveled bridges over Interstate 81 in the city,
one of you may soon no longer be nameless. City Council should have a
recommendation at one of its meetings this month - Tuesday and April
23 - for the naming of a bridge after Martin Luther King Jr.,

HARRISONBURG - How does Martin Luther King Jr. Bridge sound?

Cantrell Avenue is the "most promising" option for a Harrisonburg
street to be renamed after the civil rights activist, City Councilman
Charles Chenault said. City staff had been reviewing Vine Street, per
a resident's request, as the street to change. But with more than 500
addresses, it was proving to be "unworkable," Chenault said. With
Cantrell - which runs from South High Street to East Market Street,

HARRISONBURG - Stan Maclin enjoys symbolism, and none more than that which promotes peace.

In Harrisonburg, though, he says one symbol is missing: a street named
after Martin Luther King Jr. That could soon change. Specifically,
Vine Street might change. Maclin, who founded the Harriet Tubman
Cultural Center in downtown Harrisonburg, formally presented his idea
of renaming a city street - Vine, preferably - after King to City
Council on Tuesday. "It's a tremendous..."

the disease. When he was lying on the operating table, Maclin's heart
stopped. "I believe I went to heaven," he said Thursday, wearing dark
sunglasses that help to keep the glare from irritating his eyes. "I
heard God speaking to me." He said...

If ever there were two historical black women who should visit over a

And, thanks to a visit from an "international storyteller" and a local
black woman, the two heroines will finally have the chance to chat

re-enactor from the Philadelphia area, will join Wilhelmina Johnson of
Harrisonburg for a re-enactment called "A conversation with Harriet

HARRISONBURG - For Harrisonburg resident Gloria Carter, the signs of
segregation were apparent at every turn during her youth.

Carter, who is black, grew up in the city in the 1940s and '50s, years
before segregation began to crumble under the weight of the Civil
Rights movement. She recalls having to enter the local grocery store
through a separate entrance, and being forced to sit in the balcony at
the local movie theater. And then there's a specific memory she says
she will...

In 1778, a slave named Will was sentenced to death for killing a white
man. He was hanged in Harrisonburg, his head chopped off and displayed
on a stake near Cross Keys Road and then his body was burned. Though
it happened more than 200 years ago, Will's death continues to
resonate with some city residents, who are holding a healing service
this week to help bring closure to the event.

"We're not condoning what the man did," said Doug Mason, whose
